Clematis ASTRA NOVA was selected in 2009 from a crossing made back in 2006 by J van Zoest nursery in Holland and after five years of trials and development Thorncroft Clematis Nursery selected the plant for inclusion in its collection due to its superb attributes.
The official introduction was made at an autumn plant festival held at Thorncroft Clematis Nursery and in association with a media campaign which created a great deal of interest in a clematis that is now widely grown in the UK.
Although it is a part of the viticella family, clematis ASTRA NOVA is not too vigorous in overall height making around 6-8 feet during a year meaning you can also grow it in a large container.
The blooms are around 2-3 inches across and come in great clusters across the plant from the beginning of June to the end of September, making it one of the longest flowering viticella Thorncroft stock.
At home growing in a wide variety of situations, clematis ASTRA NOVA is a versatile plant that will happily adorn your walls and fences, arbours and arches but also consider it suitable for growing through a host plant like wisteria or scrambling through the stems of a bamboo.
The flamboyant, eye-catching semi-double, violet-purple flowers have a white stripe in the centre of the tepal and a spiky centre of violet-purple and white petaloid stamens. An outstanding cultivar for your garden.
Included in this group are those clematis commonly thought of as Viticella's, or viticella crosses. However we have taken the liberty to include some other cultivars in this group because their growth, habit and appearance is identical to that of the Viticella's. They include the likes of 'Blekitny Aniol', 'Polish Spirit' and 'Prince Charles' because of their similarities, and for ease of selection, we feel justified in placing them within this group.
They are all extremely hardy, very free flowering, their pruning is simple and they cannot be recommended highly enough. Especially useful for people new to growing clematis as they are extremely tolerant of what the gardener does to them! They all make excellent companions to grow with roses.

I received my order of Astra Nove delivered by a polite and efficient courier whose whereabouts and ETA I was able to track - brilliant !
The plant was of excellent quality, very carefully packed and of reasonable price. Full planting and care instructions were enclosed which was very helpful.
I cannot comment on flowering yet but look forward to it.
I can fully recommend this company and will ordering again soon.

Hasn't flourished in its first year so hopeful for next year 2020.
Previous one in another garden wasn't great either but we moved so no idea if it got going
Looking better this year and lots of growth and buds are now opening. A vigorous grower.
Very pleased - up to 4 star now but it was a slow starter.
