Cultivation Advice
In some countries these wonderful plants are considered to be invasive and problematic, however in the UK this is not the case. The tangutica clematis are extremely useful in the garden, providing colour and interest from mid-summer through to late autumn, with most producing excellent seed-heads for added interest in the winter months.  They cope well with hot, sunny situations and are drought tolerant, even thriving in poorer conditions where you would think they would struggle. They will not tolerate very heavy clay soils that sit waterlogged, nor any over-watering.  Very easy to grow and low maintenance with simple pruning. Avoid them becoming too excessively wet during their first autumn and winter in the ground or perhaps plant in the spring.
The tangutica can all be late to show new shoots and growth in the spring, so do not panic and think that they are dead, they are just having a lay in!

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

I am revamping one of the borders in my garden and wanted another clematis to cover a fence panel. I chose this one as it fitted the colour scheme. It arrived within a few days of my ordering it and is very healthy looking. I've planted it and it's doing well.

I messaged the company to ask a question and was called back very speedily. All questions answered and in such a pleasant manner.
The clematis was perfectly boxed and packed and so very healthy, even had one of this years flowers still on it, which was was a bonus.
I really can’t fault either the service or the goods received.

Had always wanted one of the yellow tangutica clematis. Only have a small garden so Golden Tiara seemed ideal. She is now planted, and seems very happy. After one week she is already climbing across the trellis. Was delivered so well packed and was given all the pre-planting care recommended. Fingers crossed for a beautiful display later on!

Very Healthy Looking Plants

I ordered 3 clematis and all arrived together. The were very well packed in a sturdy cardboard box and there was not so much as one leaf damaged. The plants look in extremely good condition and came with very good instructions on planting, pruning and general care.
This is my first order with this company but I'm sure it won't be my last.
