Cultivation Information

clematis Advent Bells has a charming cream flower, very heavily freckled and striped inside with red, will provide a great profusion of dainty hanging blooms during the winter months. Even more abundant than the ever popular Freckles.

Advent Bells is a cross between napaulensis and Freckles, meaning it will usually have a summer dormancy.

Cultivation Advice
These winter flowering clematis produce masses of nodding bell-like flowers. Whilst the foliage is classed as EVERGREEN it looks at its best in autumn, winter and spring, they can have a natural dormant period in summer, when the leaves sometimes go brown.  The Cirrhosa Group require a sunny, free draining situation that is sheltered from the worst of the cold winds.  If required, prune immediately after flowering.
IMPORTANT! While in a dormant state during summer they do not want frequent watering because this can cause damage to the root, they are used to being dry during the summer. Avoid them becoming too excessively wet during their first autumn and winter in the ground or perhaps consider planting in the spring.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

Great communication and delivery service. We'll packaged and no plastic pollution either. Good quality, large plant and very helpful planting and care instructions. Plant has slightly yellow leaves which have not yet recovered - I think it is just what happens with evergreen clematis in summer + we have had exceptionally hot weather. The other clematis I bought at the same time is tip top, so I am expecting this one will be just as good in the long run

I bought this on a whim when i saw it in a magazine or online.
I wanted something for the winter months and thought it would take a year to get established before flowering. Thorncrofts plant arrived the day after ordering, it was nearly 3 foot tall and had flowers dripping from it all the way up.
the flower finished after just three weeks but then it wa s a new plant and then it started to grow, and boy did it GROW!!
Its now about 7 feet tall and spreads about the same. next year its going to be stunning! I wish I could post pictures here.
