Cultivation Information
clematis Arabella has mid mauvy-blue flowers with a hint of a rose pink bar when first open.
A long standing favourite of our family and one that has done really well in our garden. Whether facing south and baked in the sun or growing in the shade of a tree, it always flourishes and provides in our experience, the longest flowering period of all clematis. A scrambler by nature, 'Arabella' requires some tying in if you want her to climb up, however growing up the middle of an obelisk she will get on with it on her own and she is a lovely plant to grow for cut flowers.
Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit

Cultural Advice
These herbaceous cultivars are clump-forming scramblers, or semi-climbers.
In general, they have non-clinging stems and can be allowed to scramble in herbaceous borders, alternatively they can be used to clamber through open shrubs, small trees, rambler and shrub roses, or obelisks.
They are all hardy, very free flowering, trouble-free clematis, suitable to use as cut flowers and come highly recommended.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

Clematis Arabella - just superb
Rating:
24 May 2024  |

I have loads of clems in my garden, but has never heard of Arabella.
It has lovely, small flowers held on woody stems that pretty much stand up by themselves. I have tied mine in against a white painted fence and it looks cool. Arrived professionally packaged and in great condition.
About to order my next one!

The Clematis came perfectly packaged and in wonderful condition. Only downside was it took quite a long time to arrive but, ordering in April, that's to be expected. And the Clematis was well worth the wait!

This was a present so I can't comment on the flowers but the plant I received was, as usual, in great, healthy condition

I’m a new gardener and found the website easy to navigate to find something right for me. The ordering process was easy and the clematis arrived nicely packed with instructions within a few days (and I received updates about the order progress along the way). Plant looked healthy when it arrived and is now planted - time will tell if I can keep it alive!
