Cultivation Information

The slightly reddy purple blooms have a hint of white at the base of each sepal and almost black anthers. One of the largest blooms in the viticella group and very popular to grow with peach or apricot roses.

A Japanese beauty to adorn your garden.

For this fantastic clematis life started back in 1997 when Masashi Iino took the two clematis florida 'Sieboldiana' and 'Rubra' from the group viticella and created a batch of seedlings.  From these seedlings would emerge the plant that was to be called 'Night Veil'.
The plant was later registered by our late good friend Hiroshi Takeuchi from who we at Thorncroft got our first plants of Night Veil.  It was subsequently launched by Thorncroft Clematis at the Hampton Court Flower Show and became a very popular plant for years to come.

The slightly reddy purple blooms have a hint of white at the base of each sepal and almost black anthers but on some soils can be more reddy in colour. The flowers stand out from the leaf of the plant on long flower stems that give it a very dainty appearance which would fool you into thinking it was tender or needing protection.  Far from it, this is classified as a viticella type of clematis meaning it is hardy coping with temperatures into the 30's during summer and as low as -15 in the winter, so very tough indeed.
These clematis prefer a good quality soil with high nutrient levels and a soil which is moist but free-draining. Improve planting holes with at least 2 forkfuls of well rotted manure or garden compost and if you don't have these use a 'Soil Improver' compost. The improvement material added should be placed under the root of the plant not around it. This encourages the roots to grow downwards and remain deep and cool during summer. There is no need to deadhead these clematis, however if they appear to have finished flowering earlier than you expected, there is no harm in giving them a light trim to encourage new growth and a secondary flowering late in the autumn.

In most UK gardens clematis 'Night Veil' will bloom from around the middle of June right through to the end of September and can make about 7-8 foot of growth during a year.
It is best to prune each spring to around a foot from the soil and remove all the dead growth from the previous year, this allows the plant to produce nice fresh new growth from low down.
Use 'Night Veil' inside an obelisk to provide height in a boarder, or against a pale coloured fence panel or wall.  It is happy growing through other plants like wisteria or roses to provide interest after they have finished or to add a luxuriant deep velvety backdrop to pale roses. Avoid deep shade or a water logged soil situation.
How will you use yours?

Cultivation Advice

Included in this group are those clematis commonly thought of as Viticella's, or viticella crosses. However we have taken the liberty to include some other cultivars in this group because their growth, habit and appearance is identical to that of the Viticella's. They include the likes of 'Blekitny Aniol''Polish Spirit' and 'Prince Charles' because of their similarities, and for ease of selection, we feel justified in placing them within this group.

They are all extremely hardy, very free flowering, their pruning is simple and they cannot be recommended highly enough. Especially useful for people new to growing clematis as they are extremely tolerant of what the gardener does to them! They all make excellent companions to grow with roses.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

This plant was damaged upon arrival, the box had a significant dent in it. The green holding piece was detached and the supporting canes were loose. The plant got of to bad start but we planted it anyway. So far it is not looking too healthy but we hope it comes good as we like the flower colour

This arrived as a very healthy and well packaged plant. It has been in the garden two weeks and is growing very well. I bought another from Thornctoft last year and it is already full of buds. Really beautiful plants.
