Cultivation Information
This pretty silvery-pink star-shaped flower has very pointed tips, and margins outlined with light purple. Its beautiful crown of stamens have purple filaments and bright yellow anthers. A compact climber perfect for a pot!
Received a Top Award in a Popular Garden Magazine Dec 2020.

Named by its breeder Mr Raymond Evison, in recognition of the great volunteer work that the Samaritans offer to people in distress. All volunteers for The Samaritans are known as Samaritan Jo.
clematis Samaritan Jo is an exceptionally versatile garden plant. You can grow it in a patio container or in the garden, you can use it planted in multiples to create a large mass of colour and you can use it mixed with other plants as a companion to provide a contrast in colour and some 'wow' factor.

Containers are a great place to use the versatile clematis Samaritan Jo and at Malvern Spring Festival we used it mixed with clematis Paulie to create a stunning display in a trough. The finished product measured 90cm across, 120cm tall and 40cm deep.
With a simple bamboo support to and this lovely container, we showed how simply you can create an all summer feature on a budget and many visitors simply could not walk away from it!
Clematis Samaritan Jo will bloom each year from the middle of May almost continuously through to the end of September or even early October. Trim dead heads and give a little tomato feed every two weeks to help keep the flowering going.

Each flower is about 3-5 inches across and the plant will grow to about 4-5 feet in height in most garden situations while it will also grow on most aspects, including part shade as well.
As a deciduous climber you will need to cut Samaritan Jo down to about 12-18 inches each spring, removing all the dead growth by cutting just above a nice green bud or shoot.
If growing in a container, it is hardy enough to be left outside all winter, so long as the container drains well to avoid it becoming waterlogged.

When planting a container for a big impact you do need to plant multiples to get a really impressive show, two plants is sometimes enough but three makes all the difference!
Choose varieties with the same pruning type to make life easier for yourself each spring and use a good potting compost like John Innes No.3 mixed 3 parts to 1 part multi-purpose compost.

Cultivation Advice.

Large flowered clematis prefer a good quality soil with high nutrient levels and a soil which is moist but free-draining. Improve planting holes with at least 2 forkfuls of well rotted manure or garden compost and if you don't have these use a 'Soil Improver' compost. The Improvement material added should be placed under the root of the plant not around it. This encourages the roots to grow downwards and remain deep and cool during summer. If your clematis flowers in May-June(late spring), cut the dead flower heads when they have finished to encourage a second set of flowers to be produced in the late summer and autumn. Be prepared to wait for a couple of years before they will be at their best - Our saying is - 1st year = Roots, 2nd year = Shoots, 3rd year = Flowers!

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

My favourite clematis of all time
Rating:

I love this clematis. I grow it in a very shady position, with only a few hours of morning sun. It flowers abundantly, and repeatedly. I find it the most beautiful and most elegant of all the clematis I own.

Excellent plants and service

Over the last couple of years we have ordered a total of 9 clematis from Thorncroft. Plants are well packed and delivery is quick. All have been excellent plants, good sturdy growth, lots of stems and good root system. This one, Samaritan Jo, is lovely - looks just like the photo and has flowered abundantly. Good thick growth, not at all straggly. We grow it up a trellis in a semi-shaded position (gets late afternoon sun) and it's thriving. have bought clematis from other suppliers in past and whilst they may be marginally cheaper the plant quality and service at Thorncroft is far superior. Highly recommend and would buy again.
