Cultivation Information
These elegant silvery-mauve-grey flowers have a pretty satin sheen and, with their wonderful crown of pale yellow stamens, combine to make a very 'regal' looking bloom.

Cultivation Advice.

Large flowered clematis prefer a good quality soil with high nutrient levels and a soil which is moist but free-draining. Improve planting holes with at least 2 forkfuls of well rotted manure or garden compost and if you don't have these use a 'Soil Improver' compost. The Improvement material added should be placed under the root of the plant not around it. This encourages the roots to grow downwards and remain deep and cool during summer. If your clematis flowers in May-June(late spring), cut the dead flower heads when they have finished to encourage a second set of flowers to be produced in the late summer and autumn. Be prepared to wait for a couple of years before they will be at their best - Our saying is - 1st year = Roots, 2nd year = Shoots, 3rd year = Flowers!

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

The clematis arrived well packaged and undamaged and already had healthy growth. I followed the "hardening off" advice as described in the very helpful accompanying Care Guide leaflet. As this took 2 weeks I wanted to complete the planting before writing a review. Slugs and snails make a bee line for clematis so I have learned through trial and error that I can best protect them by planting in a container that I can protect with lots of copper tape. I also have a small 3 foot obelisk in the container for the clematis to cling to keeping it away from the fence where slugs can gain access and completely strip all the foliage from a young plant. The clematis has been in situ now for a couple of weeks and I can see new growth! I am hoping once it has managed to put on plenty of growth beyond the obelisk it can attach to the trellis I have positioned behind the container so even if the slugs manage to munch on leaves near the fence, the clematis should have enough growth to survive and produce the beautiful flowers I'm hoping for. Fingers crossed. So far I am happy with the quality of the clematis I received from Thorncroft.

Taller than I was expecting!

27 July 2021  |

We planted this beauty in 2019 after researching shade tolerant clematis. This year (2021) it really seems to have got into its stride!
As my title suggests, it is way bigger than 2m as some claim; it topped out at about 3m this year. However, this was after chopping it right down again, next year I'll group 2 prune it and see what happens.
This is an incredibly vigorous plant - it can easily grow 60cm in a month. This does make it quite leggy, though, another reason why my 6ft fence probably wasn't the best place for it!
In the shady spot I've got it, it's also prone to a bit of mildew on its stalks.
But all the moaning disappears when it flowers: even though this is only the 2nd full year in the ground it has produced masses of buds, which opened en masse. Most of the photos I've seen of silver moon don't really do it justice: it opens a mid mauve with a lovely silky texture, and is very slow to fade to the pale colour that most web sites depict it as being. It's also a good 15cm across with dead straight, overlapping tepals that give it a pleasing fullness.
Its position was always going to offer some compromises, and some or all of my criticisms might not have occurred in the 'ideal' spot, but it's a truly beautiful plant that deserves to be grown
