Taken from a recent newsletter email - Perfect Petit Faucon

This week we have a clematis that is not just looking good in our nursery but apparently also in the gardens of some of our Facebook followers. One lady commented her Petit Faucon, "is looking superb rambling up through Rosa 'The Pilgrim ', a lovely colour combination."
Let us investigate this delightful plant further and see how you might use yours.

clematis PETIT FAUCON 'Evisix' is a marvellous little plant with nodding to outward facing flowers with four rich bluey-purple tepals. The stamens have rosy-purple filaments and golden yellow anthers. A striking bloom that really catches the eye in the garden.
Starting out as a spear-like bud of deep purple, almost black in some light conditions, the flower opens to around 1.5 to 2 inches across and is produced on the new growth made throughout the spring and early summer.
Flowering lasts from late May right through to September so a very long flowering time indeed.
Spear-like buds of purply-black develop into these stunning blooms.
PETIT FAUCON 'Evisix' is herbaceous in nature, so reshoots strongly from the crown each spring and can make as much as 5 foot of growth in a year. We find however that it often makes less height when cascading or scrambling among other plants. Trained up inside an obelisk it will grow upwards strongly and need little tying in so long as it does not fall over or out of the obelisks uprights.

In the wonderful gardens of Coton Manor - Northamptonshire, you can see theirs growing inside a wonder homemade support of hazel. This is in the middle of a border of plants and you can see the structure and border in the images below.
A lovely homemade support of hazel stems support the plant just enough to display it at the desired height in the border.
And here is the border PETIT FAUCON front right.
Whether growing in full hot sun or part shade, you will find that PETTIT FAUCON will thrive in most situations other than dense shade or waterlogged soil.
Prune each February/March to about 6-8 inches and remove all the old dead stems from the previous year and she will reshoot vigorously for you as the weather warms.
Protect those low, tender new shoots from slugs and snails and give a good mulch in mid-April to hold in the winter moisture. You should reap the reward of your effort with flowers from late-May to September.
As always the question is where will you grow your PETIT FAUCON?

Cultural Advice
These herbaceous cultivars are clump-forming scramblers, or semi-climbers.
In general, they have non-clinging stems and can be allowed to scramble in herbaceous borders, alternatively they can be used to clamber through open shrubs, small trees, rambler and shrub roses, or obelisks.
They are all hardy, very free flowering, trouble-free clematis, suitable to use as cut flowers and come highly recommended.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

This is the first "scrambling" clematis I have tried and it's producing some new healthy shoots a week or so after planting. I'm hoping it gets established through late summer and autumn so it can romp away next year.

The plant was delivered in very strong packaging, and was very secure. Since planting in a large terracotta pot, the plant has flowered three times! Last time had upwards of sixty perfect blooms! I cannot recommend this plant highly enough, nor Thorncroft Clematis!
